Guide: EV Training Empty Guide: EV Training

Post by Damascus Tue Aug 16, 2011 9:49 pm

A lot of people may not know what EV Training is or how it works, so here's a brief, yet detailed guide about everything you need to know.

Effort Values
Effort Values, otherwise known as EVs, are invisible points a Pokemon gains whenever they gain experience (in-game trainer battles and wild Pokemon battles). When an opposing Pokemon is defeated, they give out 1-3 EVs that correspond to a certain stat. 4 EVs in any stat adds 1 point to your Pokemon's stat. In other words, defeating a bunch of Geodudes, which give out Defense EVs, ramps up your Pokemon's own Defense.

A Pokemon need only gain experience from a battle to gain all required EVs. Even if you switch out your Pokemon or use Exp. Share, both Pokemon that gain experience from the battle will each get full EVs.

A list of Pokemon and what EVs they give out can be found here.

Improving Stats
Your Pokemon can only gain a maximum of 510 EVs altogether, and a maximum of 255 in any one stat. So it's wise to train a Pokemon from hatching, as Pokemon you've battled with for a while have probably used up all their EVs.

Usually, trainers will tend to focus on the Pokemon's two best stats. They usually gain 252 EVs in those two stats to max out those attributes. (Since 255 is not divisible by 4, the last three EVs won't go toward that stat.) For example, a Weavile will tend to be train against Pokemon that give out Attack and Speed EVs to max out those stats.

An important thing to note is that the EVs only fully translate to stat gain by level 100. So even if you've gained all the EVs you've needed by level 10, you'll only see the massive stat gain gradually as you level up.

Improving EV Gain
There are several strategies you can use to speed up EV gain. The first is the Pokerus, a rare status condition your Pokemon can gain. Visit the link above for more information. If a Pokemon had caught the Pokerus, any EVs it gains are doubled.

There are also the EV-enhancing Power items. Holding any of these items gives 4 free Effort Values to a Pokemon any time it normally gains EVs. This extra gain is also boosted by the presence of the Pokerus.

Here's a straightforward example: You're training your Weavile in Attack, so you infect it with the Pokerus, have it hold the Power Bracer, and defeat wild Sharpedo, which give out 2 Attack EVs. The Bracer gives Weavile an extra 4 EVs, and the Pokerus doubles this total.

(2 + 4) x 2 = 12

Weavile gains 12 EVs altogether from a single Sharpedo. After 21 Sharpedos, you've gained the maximum 252 Attack EVs. That translates to Weavile's Attack stat boosted by 63 by the time it's reached Level 100!

It involves heavy planning and math skills, but in the end, that difference in stats could make or break a crucial battle! Happy training!

What about flat battles? I've been playing pokemone for years but this is the first I've heard of this. But it makes me think of something my friend said. He said that in flat battles, the pokemon dont get much weaker or stronger. So are the EVs still added to the pokemon's stats or are they reduced to that of a lvl 50 as well?

I'm actually not sure of that myself. EVs are applied as the Pokemon levels up, so I assume it keeps the stat boost (proportionally) when it goes into a Flat Battle. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether or not it makes a difference in the end if you level it up to lvl 100 to get all its EVs, or whether it all rounds out in the end.

as far as i know the ev values are kept in flat battles it ignore its current stat and uses the ev to get the stats like if it's leveled from lv. 1 with those ev.
ex my vaporeon is currently lv. 73 and i ev trained it in health and sp. def. its stats in health is 327 and sp. def is 223 at that level. when i do flat battle vaporeons stats are 227 in health and 155 in sp. def which is only 10 points off from being from max stat for level 50 on vaporeon.
my next example if my flareon. flareon is Lv. 49 and ev trained in attack and sp. def his current stat are 161 in attack and 152 in sp. def. when i do flat battle his attack is 184 and his sp. def is 155. as you see in one level he gains 23 points in attack. now if i level him normally he is not going to gain 23 points in one level.
thats why i like flat battles you dont have to worry about current stats, your stats are going to be determined with ev, iv, and the nature of the pokemon

Guide: EV Training Empty Ev Training Addition

Post by Seoulkat Mon Dec 31, 2012 8:42 am

Hello everyone, I would like to discuss the difference between level 100 and level 50 stat gains.

At level 100, any given stat can have a maximum gain of 63 points. However, when flat battled at level 50, the stat gain is halved so you would only get 31.5 points. Half points are dropped in the stat equation.

This means that the two stats trained with 252 EVs and the one stat with 4 EVs could be rearranged. You could change it so two stats could be trained in 250 EVs and one in 10 EVs. However, in my opinion, the best combination for EVs for flat battles would be 248 EVs for the two and 12 EVs for the one other stat. This would allow the two stats to have the 31 points and the one stat to have 1.5 points.

Granted, this is just one way of EV training and you could totally divide the EV gain equally. I hope you have learned a little bit more about EV training with this and if you have any questions feel free to message me!
